When I was growing up, there was a huge battle. A civil war going on between, on the one side, synths, and on the other, metal fans. And I never wanted to choose sides. I absolutely love metal, but I also absolutely love synthesizer music. Whether it's Depeche Mode or Jean Michel Jarre, I love it every bit as much as I love Megadeth and Dream Theater and Slayer.

When I was making Ocular, I used a Steinberg synthesizer called Retrologue a lot. It's a classic analog synth plugin and has the ability to make some truly gnarly sounds. So what I thought I'd want to do is to make one track where everything was made with this plugin. I loaded up about eighteen different Retrologues and started tweaking knobs until I had a bass drum sound, a lead sound, a bass sound, a cymbal sound, and then put it together in an all-Retrologue rendition of Invective, just to show everyone my love of the synthesizer as an instrument.
